Answer
·  Okay, Navy OCS is for me. How do I go about submitting an application package?

Once you have decided that you want to join the Navy, your first step will be to contact the nearest officer recruiter. You can do this by going to the Navy's website at http://www.navy.com/ and going into the Officer careers section. Once here, you can request information from the nearest recruiter in your area. After you have requested information, a recruiter will contact you. He/she will be able to assist you in forming and submitting your OCS application.

·  What is the minimum number of college semester hours required to be eligible to attend OCS?

To apply for OCS, you must first speak with an officer recruiter in your area. They will be able to tell you exactly what programs are available for your degree and area of study. Some programs vary in requirements for applying, so you need to speak with your recruiter first.

·  Does OCS require any minimum college grade point average?

There is no set minimum GPA required, but instead each community has specific requirements. To find out exactly what the minimum is for the community you are interested in, speak to your officer recruiter.

·  How long is OCS?

OCS is 12 weeks in length. If assigned to a class that extends through the Christmas Block Leave period (Friday before Christmas to the Sunday after New Years Day), Candidates generally take leave and will return after the New Years to complete training. The block leave period does not count toward the total course length and each candidate will be charged leave if taken.

·  If selected for OCS, what are the chances of being selected into my first preference of community?

OCS selections are made based on the application you produce. In this, you will give details of your academic performance, extracurricular activities, past employment, etc. Each application has a space to list your top three choices of communities in the order you wish them to be selected. Your application is reviewed by a panel and you will be notified which communities you are approved for.

·  Can I turn down OCS if selected?

Yes. There is no penalty for declining OCS. But then why apply only to turn it down?

·  How soon after completing OCS will I go to my follow-on school?

Under normal circumstances candidates will attend their follow-on training within two weeks to 30 days after graduating from OCS, sometimes immediately following graduation.

·  Can I change the OCS class for which selected?

Yes. If you should desire to change your OCS class date, you must contact your officer recruiter immediately. They will have all the necessary paperwork to request the change and will notify you as soon as it is completed.

·  I have been selected for OCS. What can I do to prepare myself for OCS training?

Get in shape! Start a physical fitness program to prepare yourself for the rigors of OCS training. Run, jog, do sit-ups and push-ups. One of the primary reasons for OCS disenrollments is poor physical conditioning of candidates.

·  I have a permanent medical condition. Should I apply to OCS?

If you have a profile that prohibits you from running, doing push-ups, sit-ups or pull-ups then you should not apply for OCS. The alternate PT test is not given at OCS.

·  I have had laser corrective eye surgery (LASIK). Can I apply for OCS?

As long as the examining physician indicated on your physical that you are qualified for appointment, you can apply for OCS.

·  Is the alternate PT test given at OCS?

No. No waivers considered or granted.

·  Can I get an age waiver and attend OCS?

Waivers for age requirements generally come from the community that the candidate is seeking entry into. Any waivers in the age requirements must be requested through your officer recruiter and will be part of your application package. Talk with your officer recruiter or career counselor about what age options are open to you.

·  Are there any official Navy webpages for OCS?

Yes. Officer Training Command Newport, Rhode Island, OTCN, maintains a website for OCS. It can be accessed by clicking here, https://www.ocs.navy.mil/.

·  Where can I find other information?

Read the Sticky Topics at the top of each forum and browse through the forums using the search function to see what other members just like you have said about preparing for and attending OCS.
